Be Relentless When you look around today, you see weak men everywhere. I can say this because I used to be one of them. Weak because I sedated, lied, and was the biggest hypocrite walking. It was all good until I finally hit a wall in 2015. From the outside looking in, I had it made: Setting records in business and getting all the praise A beautiful, intelligent, successful wife A healthy, handsome, athletic son Thriving businesses Custom house being built Driving the vehicle I wanted
The only problem was, I was empty inside. I sedated with: Work Social media Porn Booze Gambling Food Marijuana Giving advice/judging
I'd do anything to relieve the stress and take my mind off everything on my plate. I remember the moment that everything changed for me. My ego was out of control, and I felt disrespected by my former franchise, so I set some crazy numbers in business. At the end of 2014, I would grow my business by 43% to hit this crazy number that I thought would make me happy. I put my head down for the year and did what I said I would do. I remember arguing with my wife in a hotel room in Florida, where I would pick up my award at the yearly conference for my franchise. I was arguing with my wife because I was in Florida with my ego solely focused on making every meeting my franchise had scheduled, even though I could've been teaching the sessions. As my wife and son explored Florida, she let me have it for not making time for them, but I couldn't see the problem. “This is a business trip. Most men don't even bring their families.” That was the story I was telling myself. How dare she. Here I was, busting my butt to hit numbers in business and finally get the recognition I deserved, and she was griping at me. Ungrateful. That night was the awards ceremony, and I remember my area director praising me on the stage and grabbing my glass trophy, only for me to walk off feeling nothing but emptiness inside. All this hard work for a stupid glass trophy. Here I was: The heaviest and most stressed I'd ever been, but I was preaching to my clients what they should/shouldn't be eating. Producing all kinds of money, but no clarity, purpose, or mission why. Disconnected from my wife; she was on the verge of gaining her senses and leaving me. No connection with God and thinking it was all about me. A hypocrite to my son.
I had climbed what I thought was the ladder of success, but the only problem was that my ladder was on the wrong building. I realized I had made the same mistake my father had made by only focusing on growing the business. I witnessed the fruit of his decisions: Heart failure patient My mother tired of his BS and leaving him after 30+ years of marriage No relationship with God He was tired and burnt out in business because his body was failing him Leaned on alcohol to deal with life's stresses
That's when I decided something needed to change. If you've read this far, maybe you relate to some of what I'm saying. So where do we go from here? What changed for me? I realized I was a liar, and my lies were causing all my friction, aka stress. So I made a deal with myself that I'd quit lying. Most men are liars: We lie not to hurt feelings. We lie by omission. We lie to fudge the numbers and make ourselves feel good. We lie because we're embarrassed.
The problem with lying is we live a life of fiction, aka fantasy, which means we have no clear starting point. So even if we decide to change, we'll never see actual results unless we quit lying. —— Wow! Seth isn’t holding anything back! This is the first part of a two-part series from him.
